Donald Trump breaks his silence on Megan Rapinoe after USA win Women's World Cup final

Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to congratulate the United States Women's National Team for winning the Women's World Cup final in Lyon.

Megan Rapinoe opened the scoring from the penalty spot in a 2-0 victory against the Netherlands to lift the trophy for the second time in a row following victory in 2015.

Arsenal players Vivianne Miedema and Danielle Van De Donk were on the losing side as the Dutch were picked apart by the reigning champions.

She also finished with the Golden Boot having struck six goals at the tournament but while she excelled on-the-pitch her public feud with US president Trump became the focus of attention outside of match days.

The two-time world champion has been vocal in her criticism of her country's head of state and claimed that she would not attend the White House to meet Trump though as a World Cup-winner.

It is customary for championship-winning sides to be invited to the residence of the US premier and her comments sparked a spat between the two across social media and press conferences.

Rapinoe made her feelings clear prior to the tournament and as her comments resurfaced Trump responded with a thread on Twitter that slammed the forward, telling her to win before speaking out about turning down a trip to the White House.

Following the win over the Netherlands, fans reacted on social media to send a message to the US president as it was noted that he did not immediately offer congratulations to the team after their victory in Lyon.

However, Trump eventually broke his silence on the game to praise the US women's national team.

On Twitter he said: "Congratulations to the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team on winning the World Cup!

"Great and exciting play. America is proud of you all!"

A selection of the tweets sent to Trump prior to his message can be found below.

In her post-match press conference, Rapinoe was asked about a potential visit to the White House and whether she would still reject an invitation.

"I haven't spoken to everyone about it," she said. "Obviously not myself and I suspect not many, if any, of the other players."

Former president Barack Obama invited Rapinoe and her teammates to visit the White House in 2015 following their Women's World Cup final win over Japan.

Striker Abby Wambach even took a selfie with Trump's predeccessor before retiring from the game in the aftermath of the tournament.
