Fans hail Mo Salah as a 'feminist icon' after incredible Time 100 interview

Mo Salah has been hailed as a "feminist icon" after his interview with Time magazine.

The Liverpool star was named one of TIME's top 100 most influential people in the world amongst others such as Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Michelle Obama and Mark Zuckerberg.

During his interview, Salah spoke directly for the first time on the importance of female equality.

He said: "I think we need to change the way we treat women in our culture.

"It’s not optional.”

His comments have seen him hailed as an even bigger hero than people already thought, with many labelling him a "feminist icon" on social media.

One Twitter user @trashsavethecat said: "The two most important feminists of our age, Beyonce and Mo Salah."

Another also said: "Feminist icon and the best non-Messi player on the planet, Mohamed Salah."

User @lackinggrit enthusiastically added: "FEMINIST ICON MOHAMED SALAH"

Salah himself shared his Time front cover to his own Instagram page.

In the post he said: "I’m honoured to have made the #Time100 list for 2019. Always ready to help make the world a better place."

John Oliver, who interviewed Mo for TIME spoke highly and lovingly about Salah who he described as a "better human being than he is a footballer".

The comedian said: "Mo Salah is a better human being than he is a football player. And he’s one of the best football players in the world.

"You’d be hard-pressed to find a professional athlete in any sport less affected by their success or status than Mo, which is incredible because I can’t imagine the kind of pressure that comes with the intensity of adoration he receives.

"Mo is an iconic figure for Egyptians, Scousers and Muslims the world over, and yet he always comes across as a humble, thoughtful, funny man who isn’t taking any of this too seriously.

"As a footballer, he plays with an infectious joy. I’ve always wondered what it would feel like to be able to play as well as him, and watching his face light up after he does something incredible, you get the reassuring sense that it’s exactly as fun as you’d want it to be.
