Fans get stadia boost as Nicola Sturgeon confirms September return date

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is hoping Scottish football stadia will be open for spectators from September 14.

Fans have been locked out since March with the new campaign starting behind closed doors, but some supporters will be able to get back in next month.

Sturgeon did warn that it could all change again during the next month should there be a significant change in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

But it's a huge boost for the SPFL and the clubs that they will be able to have some form of a crowd going through their gates by the middle of September.

It also means that Rangers' powderkeg visit to Celtic Park on October 17 for the first derby of the season should have fans in attendance.

During First Minister’s Questions, Sturgeon said: "We hope from September 14 sports stadia will be opened although only with a limited number of spectators, and with strict physical distancing in place.

"Some professional sports events might be arranged with spectators before then with a Scottish government agreement to test the safety of any new arrangements."

Record Sport exclusively revealed earlier this week that a test event could take place at BT Murrayfield next week when Edinburgh Rugby take on Glasgow Warriors in the PRO14.

That is still to be rubberstamped by the Scottish government but could provide an opportunity to test the systems being put in place to lower the risk of the virus spreading.

Celtic have also looked to host test events although none have been allowed so far for the Parkhead club.

Scottish football is still at risk of being shut down after two major breaches of the coronavirus guidelines, and players will need to remain on their best behaviour in the coming weeks to get fans back in.
