Fans fury as Tottenham and Liverpool fans given just 16k tickets each for final

At least 100,000 Tottenham and Liverpool fans are expected to descend on Madrid for the all-English Champions League final.

It will be one of the largest invasions of English club supporters for any single match abroad.

Each side is expected to take around 50,000 supporters to the Spanish capital.

But most of them will be watching in Madrid’s fan zones and bars after each club was allocated just 16,613 tickets.

Some said they were furious that many “fatcat” corporate sponsors would be in the 68,000-seater stadium on June 1 at the expense of loyal fans.

Incredibly, two tickets were on sale for £90,000 yesterday on website StubHub.

Most commercial flights are sold out and fares have rocketed so some fans are even chartering planes.

With English football on a high, last night Arsenal and Chelsea set up an all-London European cup final.

Both clubs won their Europa League semi-finals ahead of a showdown in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 29.

The Gunners beat Valenica at the Spaniards’ Mestalla stadium, after going with a 3-1 first-leg lead.

Chelsea won at home against Eintracht Frankfurt following a 1-1 first leg in Germany.

It will see the running of the 240th Derby, while heavyweight boxing champ Anthony Joshua takes on Andy Ruiz in New York.

Completing a memorable day, bitter rivals Australia and New Zealand both play their cricket World Cup matches.

William Hill’s Rupert Adams said: “June 1 is certain to be a betting bonanza – the Champions League final will have unprecedented interest. If you add in that the Derby and the Joshua fight are on the same day the industry will turn over hundreds of millions.”

The British Beer & Pub Association said it would give the industry a much needed shot in the arm.

Chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: “Major sporting events provide a great opportunity for pubs to get people through the door and can contribute as much as  £5million in extra revenue.

“When it comes to watching live sport, only being there in person can compare with watching it in the pub.

“We fully expect Brits to pack out their local for a great day of sport.”

European football’s governing body, UEFA, came under fire after 4,000 final tickets were sold to “fans worldwide”, with the rest going to the organising committee, national associations and commercial partners.

Fans of both clubs said they were furious that most real supporters would miss out.

Mark Solomons, 56, a Spurs season ticket holder since 1982, said: “I’ve been going to Spurs for nearly 50 years so I’ve been waiting a bloody long time for this.

“I’ll be spitting blood if I miss out because what should be my seat is occupied by some fatcat sponsor who has never queued for a bag of chips in Tottenham High Road.”

Liverpool fan Darren Wells, 30, agreed and said: “How the hell can UEFA justify such a pathetic allocation to the two clubs?

"It’s always the real fans that go every week that miss out."

Non-stop scheduled flights to Madrid have been are now costing more than £1,300 return.

And private aviation specialist Air Charter Service said it had been flooded with requests from groups of friends ready to break the bank, hiring anything from six-seater jets to Boeing 737s.

Andy Christie, from the firm said: “We are seeing huge demand for aircraft to get desperate fans to the final.”

Others are booking indirect flights while some are planning to drive more than 1,000 miles to Madrid.

But they may struggle to sleep if they get there, as the price of hotel rooms for June 1 have shot up.

  • Retailer Zavvi last night said it was “extremely sorry” after mistakenly sending out a mass email congratulating customers on winning VIP final tickets. A spokesman said: “Unfortunately, there is only one winner.”
