Fans deliver brutal verdict on Manchester United's summer transfer window hopes

It’s certainly been a season to forget so far for Manchester United fans – and it’s perhaps unsurprising they aren’t too confident about the summer either.

Just over halfway through the season, their hopes of any silverware look to be over after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough on Friday in a game that perhaps summed up their campaign.

Despite Ralf Rangnick’s arrival as interim manager generally yielding better results, performances have still been lacking, and fans were left frustrated once again as spurned chance after chance in throwing away their best hope of a trophy.

The defeat came after a chaotic end to the January transfer window, with Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial leaving on loan, while Jesse Lingard and Dean Henderson had moves blocked on deadline day.

All the while, United chose to make no new signings, despite obvious areas for improvement, and now they will have to battle to finish fourth in the Premier League using the same squad that has severely underperformed so far this season.

You’ve had your say on how you think the January window went for the Reds, and it’s fair to say you aren’t impressed.

In the Manchester Evening News’ poll, we asked you to rate United’s window out of 10, with 46.1 per cent of you giving it a rating of just one.

In fact, there really weren’t many high scores, with 12.6% giving it a rating of two, while 11.5% went to the dizzying heights of three.

And it seems supporters don’t have any more confidence when it comes to the summer transfer window, when United should have their new permanent manager in place.

We asked you whether you are confident that United will sign the players they need in the summer, with 57.3% of fans voting no.

Just 21.8% said they were confident, while 20.9% said they are unsure, underlining how poorly things have gone over the past few years for the club in the transfer market.

Plenty of big names have been linked, including the likes of Erling Haaland and Declan Rice, but it remains to be seen how far United will get in chasing after their big targets, and whether they can make a difference in turning around their fortunes next season.
