Fans defend Sushmita Sen against trolls calling former Miss Universe a 'Gold Digger' for dating Lalit Modi

Indian Premier League founder Lalit Modi surprised all when he announced that he is currently dating former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress, Sushmita Sen. In a mushy social media post, Modi also didn't rule out the possibility of marriage someday.

"Just back in London after a whirling global tour #maldives #sardinia with the families - not to mention my better-looking partner @sushmitasen47- a new beginning a new life finally. Over the moon. In love does not mean marriage YET. BUT ONE THAT For sure," Lalit captioned the post that gave way to rumours that the two have already tied the knot.

He later issued a clarification, "Not married - just dating each other. That too it will happen one day."

Soon after the IPL Founder went public about the romance, Twitter errupted with rater mixed reaction to the news. While some cheered on the happy couple, there were many others who poked fun at the two, made mems, mocked their 10-year age gap and even went as far as calling the actress a 'god digger'.

"watch now how everyone labels Sushmita Sen a gold digger," a Twitter user predicted shortly after the couple went public.

Unfortunate to say so, several trolled slammed Sushmita for dating Lalit and dubbed her as "Sushmita gold digger Sen."

Another said, "There's no way anyone can convince me that Sushmita Sen fell in TRUE LOVE with Lalit Modi!! Absolutely no one.. "

Shortly after the negative tweets took up the top trends on Twitter, fans stepped up to condemn the misogyny surrounding the comments. A tweet by comedian Aanchal Agrawal defending the actress also went viral with many applauding her post.

Calling out the double standards of society, wrote, "Today as we learned she (Sushmita Sen) is apparently dating a guy who’s more rich than her, people were quick to call her a gold digger in better words."

Comparing Sush's relationship with Lalit Modi to Pete Davidson's romance with multi-illionaire Kim Kardashian, she said, "I don’t see anyone call Pete Davidson a gold digger for dating Kim, he is being hailed as a hero. Why? He is not as rich, and not the same age."

She asked, "Why do we have this bias even today when we have access to information to learn and be better? And who are you to say it’s a mistake, if it is a mistake it is her mistake to make, you my friend should focus on your life, because her mistakes won’t affect you, your own will."

Several others also came out in support of the actress and slam the ideology behind the trolling. One said, "The casual misogyny surrounding Sushmita rn accusing her of being a gold digger is bothering me. Firstly, she's literally Sushmita Sen. Secondly it just supports the notion that non conventionally attractive men need money to have a woman who loves them. Double edged sword guys."

Another added, "Indian parents that won't let their sons sign up for a wedding without dowry - ridiculing Sushmita Sen as gold digger!"

Lalit was previously married to Minal Sagrani, whom he married in October of 1991. They had two children together - son Ruchir and daughter Aliya. Lalit is also a stepfather to Karima Sagrani, from Minal's first marriage. Minal passed away after losing her battle with cancer in 2018.

On the other hand, Sushmita was in a long tearm relationship with model Rohman Shawl, whom she met through Instagram in 2018, but broke up with him last year. She is a mother of two adopted daughters Renee and Alisah.

On the work front, the actress was last seen in Aarya Season 2, which gathered positive responses from the netizens. Sushmita recently announced that the production work for the third season of her crime thriller series has already begun.
