Fans could be in ground for Leeds United's game with Manchester United later this month

Leeds United's trip to arch rivals Manchester United could be played out in front of fans later this month.

The Red Devils plan to house up to 2,000 supporters in the Stretford End and Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, should the UK government place Greater Manchester in Tier 2.

Clubs based in the Tier 1 category of COVID-19 restrictions can permit up to 4,000 supporters but Greater Manchester was placed in Tier 3 - as was Leeds.

The Government are due to review regions on December 16 and Man United are said to be hopeful of allowing fans in for the match which takes place on Sunday, December 20.

United chief operating officer Collette Roche said: "It is important to present these conditional plans for the return of our fans to allow preparations to be made. We are eager to welcome them back and thank them in advance for their patience and co-operation with our new operating policies that are in place to keep everyone safe.

"Responsible behaviour will help build trust and confidence, helping us move back to greater capacity numbers in the future once Manchester's restrictions are reduced."

Tomorrow will see Leeds play in front of supporters for the first time since March when 2,000 fans watch their clash away at Chelsea.
