Fans come to Northern Ireland football legend's rescue ahead of wedding anniversary

Fans have come to the rescue of Northern Ireland football legend Gerry Armstrong and his wife Debby ahead of their 15th wedding anniversary.

The couple had been hoping to renew their marriage vows in Thailand this weekend but those plans had to be ditched due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Former Tottenham and Real Mallorca forward Gerry took to social media this week to ask fans for some alternative suggestions.

"We celebrate our 15th anniversary this Sunday, July 12," Gerry said.

"We originally wanted to return to Thailand where we got married, but it proved impossible due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"We will return at some stage. I am in Asia quite a bit so we will get out there eventually."

Instead of heading to the Far East, Gerry and Debby will celebrate their crystal anniversary in Spain.

That's after one Northern Ireland football fan made the couple an offer they couldn't refuse.

"We are flying out to Malaga, and it's big thanks to Ally Kerr from Larne," Gerry explained.

"He sent us a message saying his villa in Malaga is free for the week and that we can stay there, so that's where we are heading to celebrate our anniversary.

"It is in a place called Mijas which I have never been to before, so that will be nice. It looks like a beautiful spot.

"We booked our flights the day before yesterday and we head out on Sunday.

"We are hoping to renew our wedding vows over there - it might even happen by the poolside.

"We had to write our own vows the first time, and we are starting to put pen to paper and write some new ones. After 15 years things change.

"Our daughter Marianna wasn't even born back then. So we have a beautiful addition to this ceremony and she will be with us, and so will my sister-in-law Dawn.

"It will be special."

Gerry said he was "overwhelmed" by the response on social media.

Some of the offers included fine dining, luxury spas and even a professional singer performing at their restaurant table.

"We couldn't believe the response, and we can't thank everyone enough for their kindness and generosity," Gerry added.

"We had so many wonderful suggestions and offers. Michael Deane invited us down to his restaurant for a meal, and the singer James Huish said he would come along to wherever we were and sing for us.

"Some of the offers were brilliant, and it shows you what Northern Ireland people are like. It is a credit to our wee country."
