Fans blast 's******' leg of the tournament' as Wright and Smith miss 21 doubles

Michael Smith and Peter Wright were compared to pub players after they served up the "s******* leg of the tournament" by missing a combined 21 darts at double early on in their World Darts Championship final match.

Both players showed clear evidence of early match jitters in the opening stages as they settled into the contest.

Wright won the opening leg without much trouble, checking out on double top after Smith missed two darts to finish, the Daily Star reports.

But their second leg will go down in the history books for all the wrong reasons as one of the worst legs of darts ever seen in a world final, and the worst of this year's tournament.

Smith got down to a finish first and narrowly missed double seven with his first attempt.

Wright then squandered two darts at double top before the players became embroiled in a doubles duel more akin to a local pub than the world championship stage.

Both men stepped up to the oche on a number of occasions only to see their attempts either fall short of the target or end up outside of the outer lipstick.

In the end, the pair missed a combined 22 darts at double before Bully Boy finally put them both out of their misery, pinning double one - otherwise known as mad house - in a fitting finale.

Reaction on social media was unequivocal, with darts fans labelling the leg the worst of the tournament.

One person said: "Worst leg of leg of darts ever @OfficialPDC."

Someone else added: "Jesus Christ this is the s******* leg of the tournament."

A third person commented: "That second leg was like watching Stevie Wonder take on Andrea Bocelli #WorldDartsChampionship #WorldDartsChampionships"

Another Twitter user chimed in with: "You’ve just got to love the darts, two of the best players in the world looking like two hackers in a pub trying to finish a game, unreal! #PDCWorldChampionship."

While someone else joked: "Didn’t think the final of the World Championship would feature the worst leg of darts I’ve ever seen."

Smith may have come out on top in the second leg shenanigans, but he couldn't do anything to prevent Wright from winning the first set 3-1 as Snakebite took the lead in their race to seven.
