Fans believe Chelsea's new penalty taker to replace Ross Barkley has been confirmed

Chelsea are in Carabao Cup third round action.

Frank Lampard's men are playing League Two side Grimsby Town as the Blues aim to avoid a similar upset to Spurs by making it to the fourth round.

Things really couldn't have got off to a better start for Chelsea as they raced into a 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes thanks to goals from Ross Barkley in the third minute and Michy Batshuayi in the seventh.

The players must have thought it was game over, but the Mariners had other ideas, halving the deficit in the 19th minute through Matt Green.

The League Two side were holding their own against the Blues, but the two goal advantage was restored just before half time when Kurt Zouma was adjudged to have been fowled in the box.

Pedro stepped up to take the penalty, however, the taker left Chelsea fans confused.

It was Barkley who controversially took and missed the side's last penalty, in the Champions League game against Valencia, with Lampard insisting after that the midfielder was the first choice penalty taker.

Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool: Frank Lampard press conference

"Ross is the penalty taker, was in pre-season and was when he came on," the Chelsea boss said after the Valencia game.

Despite Barkley being on the pitch when the penalty against Grimsby was awarded, it was Pedro who stepped up, and it didn't go unnoticed among Chelsea supporters.

Chelsea will now look to build further on their lead in order to secure a place in the fourth round draw later tonight.
