Fans attending Republic of Ireland's clash with Finland surprise TV viewers

Around 6,500 fans are in attendance at Ireland's clash with Finland in Helsinki and the sight of supporters at the match left some TV viewers at home surprised this evening.

The Finnish fans are creating a lively atmosphere despite being socially distanced at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium for the Nations League game, which kicked off at 5pm Irish time.

UEFA ruled earlier this month that stadiums could operate at maximum 30% capacity if local regulations allowed for it.

Some fans wearing Ireland jerseys - presumably Irish supporters based in Finland - have even made it to the match tonight.

UEFA's decision was made after a trial which saw around 15,000 fans in the stadium for Bayern Munich's UEFA Cup win over Sevilla.

But with Covid cases soaring across Europe, the majority of countries have not been in a position to host fans at games.

Finland has handled the pandemic relatively well so far and have the benefit of performing in front of their supporters.

One Twitter user said: "Finland ground full of fans. Love to see it"

Another said: "Watching Finland v Ireland, it doesn't seem fair that some countries can have fans in and others can't. I hope Serbia don't suddenly allow fans in next month for the Scotland game. #FINIRL #UEFANationsLeague"

Another commented: "Nice to see fans at a match #Finland #COYBIG"

While another said: "Brilliant to see 8,000 Fans in Helsinki for the Finland - Ireland game."
