Fans agree on one thing after Mason Holgate’s Championship play-off performance for West Brom

Everton and West Bromwich Albion supporters were impressed by Mason Holgate’s performance in the Championship play-off semi-final last night despite the young defender’s penalty miss.

Albion were knocked out by local rivals Aston Villa in a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat on spot-kicks with Holgate spurning his attempt. The tie had earlier finished 2-2 on aggregate over two legs.

Holgate has excelled at right full-back since joining the Baggies in January and made 29 appearances for both parent and loan club over the course of the campaign.

The ECHO confirmed in March that Everton have no plans to sell the 22-year-old on a permanent deal this summer despite reported interest from the Championship.

With Kurt Zouma’s future uncertain and club captain Phil Jagielka out-of-contract , Holgate could well feature in Marco Silva’s first-team plans after a positive spell at the Hawthorns.

Following the game, however, fans all agreed that despite a potential shortage at centre-back, the starlet is potentially a natural successor for Seamus Coleman on the right of defence.
