Fancy driving a steam train for a living? Here are the latest vacancies at Beamish Museum

Fancy  taking a step back in time every time you go to work?

A number of vacancies are up for grabs at Beamish Museum, offering job seekers the chance to become part of the famous open-air museum.

The much-loved attraction, near Stanley in County Durham, is looking for seasonal workers to join its team.

All the roles have variable hours and the museum says it is looking for, "enthusiastic, hardworking individuals with a proactive ‘can do’ approach".

And if you fit the bill you could find yourself in the drivers seat of a steam locomotive.

Here are the jobs up for grabs.

Georgian and Farming Life Engagers:

The job description says: "To work with colleagues, with an absolute focus on the visitor, to help deliver a world-class experience in a living, working open air museum."

Successful applicants will be required to engage with visitors using a variety of techniques, with work including food and beverage preparation, craft activities, cooking, musical performance and dance.

They will also need to care for domestic animals as allocated.

Transport Engagers:

The opening of the Northern General Transport Bus Depot at Beamish Museum (Beamish)

As a member of the transport team these staff members will be driving/conducting steam locomotives, trams, buses and other period vehicles and demonstrating them for visitors.

Due to the safety critical nature of these roles, and operational requirements applicants must be 18 years old or over.

The minimum age for applicants is 18 years old.

The job description says: "Applicants should be able to demonstrate excellent engagement skills and an understanding of the museum’s operations."

Cleaners:

These workers will carry out cleaning and litter control in order with the aim of  'maintaining the museum to excellent standards for visitors'.

Fairground Engagers: 

The job description says: "Helping to ensure the safe management and good housekeeping of the areas, exhibits and objects within the team and to ensure the safe operation of fairground rides and activities, in line with the museum’s safe operating procedures."

Beamish, The Living Museum of the North is an open-air museum. It tells the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s and most of its houses, shops and other buildings have been rebuilt and furnished to as they once were. Beamish has its own town, 1940s farm, Edwardian railway station, a colliery, a pit village, and Pockerley Old Hall and Waggonway.

The museum's website says of the vacancies: "Beamish tells the story of everyday working life in the North East,  bringing the rich social, agricultural and industrial heritage of our region to life in a living, working, open-air museum.

"We are currently seeking our seasonal staff, these roles would suit enthusiastic, hardworking individuals with a proactive ‘can do’ approach, you will have excellent attention to detail, be hands on and people focused."

The closing date for applications is February 7.
