Fan zone with a big screen, DJ and a bar to set up at Old Market Square for Cricket World Cup

Old Market Square will be transformed into a cricket lover's paradise this month as a big screen, bar and games are put on for fans unable to get tickets.

Nottingham will host the first fan zone of the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup for games including England's tie against South Africa at The Kia Oval.

The fan zone will be in the city from May 30 until June 2 and will also include a DJ on the site and street cricket sessions. It will not be ticketed.

Hugh White, director of sport at Nottingham City Council, said: "We’re really excited to be welcoming the Cricket World Cup to Nottingham and very proud to be the first and the largest fan zone of the tournament, right in the heart of the city.

"This is a great opportunity for people without tickets to watch and experience the World Cup and also to have a go at playing, too.

More than 70 per cent of stores in new Broadmarsh Centre are now taken or in advanced negotiations

"There is something for everyone at the local fan zone. Best of all, there are no tickets or registration needed, just show up.

"We look forward to seeing you and hope you take up the invite to be part of the world’s greatest cricket celebration with us."

The fan zone will be open from 10am to 8pm every day, except for the Saturday (June 1) when it will remain open until 10.30pm. It follows a series of successful fan zones which opened up during last summer's football World Cup which saw England reach the semi finals.

Other games being played over the four days of the fan zone are West Indies V Pakistan, which will be played at Trent Bridge, and New Zealand against Sri Lanka.

Trent Bridge will host five games during the World Cup, with England taking to the field on Monday, June 3, for a tie with 2015 quarter finalists Pakistan.

The use of Trent Bridge in the tournament is expected to benefit Nottingham's economy to the tune of £18 million, according to analysis by accountancy firm EY.

The company's analysis took into account factors such as ticket sales, match day spending on food, drink and merchandise and wider spending by international visitors in the hospitality, retail and transport sectors.

The city is also expected to benefit from a tourism and business legacy generated from the tournament's global exposure.

Stephen Jackson, interim chief executive at Marketing NG, which promotes Nottingham for investment and tourism, said: "The impact of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 on Nottingham’s economy should not be underestimated.

"Around 87,500 people will attend the sell-out matches at Trent Bridge and around 75 percent of these are expected to be travelling from at least 25 miles away.

"It’s likely that they will be making use of Nottingham’s hotels, restaurants and visitor attractions during their visit.

"The flagship fan zone in Old Market Square is one of the ways we are maximising the economic impact of this event, as it will help to bring more people into the city centre during the matches, boosting the local retail and hospitality sector."
