Fans 'attacked by gang' outside Rangers function near Ibrox ahead of Old Firm clash with Celtic

Two supporters have been attacked outside a Rangers bar fan event near Ibrox stadium.

Supporters of the Govan side had gathered in the Wee Rangers Club for a function last night ahead of today's Old Firm match with Celtic .

However, the night soon descended into chaos amid a large scale disturbance - with reports online claiming a "large gang" had attacked fans outside the club.

Two men were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where they were treated for facial injuries after the attack, which took place at around 11.25pm.

The men, aged 51 and 23, were both released after treatment.

Footage online shows at least one man lying on Edmiston Drive outside the club at around midnight, surrounded by a group of men with police officers in attendance.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and are gathering CCTV footage to help with their enquiries.

Detective Constable Mark Hendry said: "Our enquiries into this incident are at an early stage and we are carrying out enquiries and gathering CCTV footage to establish more information on the circumstances surrounding this incident and identify those involved.

"At this time, I would ask anyone who was in the area who saw this incident take place, or anyone who was driving by who has dash-cam footage to contact us."

Posting on a Rangers fan forum page, one user claimed the club was attacked "by a large gang...some of them armed with knives.

"They attacked some fans who had gone outside for a smoke."

He added: "Rightly or wrongly, the door staff secured the doors to protect those inside and stopped the gang entering the premises.

"At least one person was badly injured and others required hospital treatment."

Rangers take on Celtic at Ibrox Stadium today with kick-off at 12pm.
