Fan cheats Bourbon County Stout lottery; 100 extra beer lovers jump in

Oct. 15--For about 100 people planning to get their hands on Goose Island's coveted Rare Bourbon County Brand Stout next month, the beer will remain a bit rarer than they'd hoped.

Goose Island said Thursday that someone who won the lottery to acquire one of the craft beer industry's most sought-after releases shared a web link on social media that allowed about 100 extra people to buy tickets for Goose's inaugural Rare Day event on Nov. 13.

The brewery said those people will be refunded their money, and their tickets will be voided. The link was live for about five hours Wednesday before Goose Island discovered the unauthorized purchases, Goose Island spokeswoman Megan Lagesse said.

Lagesse said a person who won the lottery shared a winning URL on the BeerAdvocate and Facebook websites; the brewery will match names of ticket holders to actual lottery winners to determine which tickets will be voided. People whose tickets will be voided, and money refunded, will be informed Thursday, Lagesse said.

Winning the lottery allowed a person to buy a $40 ticket for Rare Day, as well as the chance to buy three $60 bottles of Rare, an imperial stout aged for two years in 35-year-old bourbon barrels that is a member of the brewery's renowned Bourbon County series.
