Famous Yorkshire faces who have self isolated over coronavirus fears

As coronavirus sweeps the nation, more and more people are opting to self-isolate to minimise the spread of the global pandemic.

Public Health England have confirmed that there are now almost 1,400 confirmed cases across the UK - although the real figure is expected to be far higher.

A total of 62 cases have been confirmed in Yorkshire, with that figure expected to rise daily.

Although no famous faces in Yorkshire have publicly announced that they have contracted COVID-19 so far, several high-profile names have self-isolated as a precaution.

The first was Leeds North West MP Alex Sobel. He made the decision after appearing at the UK bus summit on February 6, where one of the attendees later tested positive for the illness.

However, he returned to work two weeks later.

Fellow MP Rachael Maskell, who represents York Central, has spoken about the challenges of self-isolation after shutting herself off to the outside world last week.

Ms Maskell went into self-isolation following a meeting with the health minister Nadine Dorries - who later tested positive for coronavirus.

"I am personally relieved to be released from self-isolation, and have learnt how challenging it is for people who will need to isolate in the future, so do not regret this experience," she said.

"However the situation concerning coronavirus is very serious and it is essential that we all follow the advice to catch our coughs and sneezes and bin them and to wash our hands for 20 seconds."

It's not just the political world which has been affected though.

Leeds Rhinos cancelled their Super League clash against Catalans Dragons at short notice after one of their players began to show symptoms which were similar to those of coronavirus.

The unnamed player underwent a test and the club opted not to travel to the south of France ahead of the game on Saturday.

Kevin Sinfield, the club's director of rugby, said: "We were travelling on a scheduled flight to Barcelona and with one of our players self-isolating, we felt it was the responsible thing to do both for our players and staff and members of the public who we would share the flight with."

Tests results have come back today (Monday) and thankfully the player has received the all-clear.

On the same day that Leeds Rhinos cancelled their match in Perpignan, Morley and Outwood MP Andrea Jenkyns announced that she was taking the necessary precautions after speaking to medical professionals.

She said: "Following a call with 111 as a precaution, having had pneumonia and a flu in the past weeks, a low white blood cell count and having developed a cough in the last few days, I was advised to self-isolate as a precaution."

Ms Jenkyns is continuing to work from home and her office can still be contacted for local issues.

Sheffield Hallam MP, Olivia Blake, is also showing symptoms of coronavirus and has subsequently cancelled all meetings.

It comes after two of her members of staff initially began showing symptoms of COVID-19 on Thursday, March 12. Ms Blake then also developed symptoms a day later.

She said: "I'm sorry to say that I am suffering from symptoms associated with coronavirus and therefore I will be self-isolating.

"I have cancelled all meetings and public engagements for at least the next week."

A number of celebrities across the world have announced that they are suffering from the effects of coronavirus.

Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, are both in isolation after testing positive for coronavirus.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi have also contracted the illness, while Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has isolated himself after his wife tested positive.
