Famous Welsh rugby town sees its two main clubs leak a staggering 174 points in one weekend

It's a town that's often been lauded as the capital of Welsh rugby.

But it wasn't exactly a capital weekend for the two main clubs in Neath.

The problems at Neath RFC this season have been well documented with financial turbulence, failure to raise teams and court battles seeing the famous Welsh club languishing at the bottom of the Principality Premiership table.

With just three points from 28 games this season and relegation to the WRU Championship, their 74-7 crushing at Ebbw Vale on Saturday wasn't perhaps as eye-brow raising as it might have been in previous campaigns.

Welsh rugby's best young players are being lured to England in major threat Wales are fighting to stop

But they weren't the only ones from the town up against it on the weekend as down on the coast Neath Athletic were being thumped 100-0 at Pyle RFC.

It was the eighth time this season Athetic have leaked more than 50 points, yet strangely they also have a 91-5 victory to their name against Division Three West Central A basement boys Glais earlier in their campaign.

Despite just three wins and a draw this season, Athletic are third from bottom in the table on 20 points... 19 ahead of Penlan and 25 in front of Glais, who prop up the table on minus five points.

The Judgement Day winners and losers as 'thunderous' Wales youngster stands tall on a conflicting day for Gareth Anscombe

At least they're faring a little better than the Gnoll outfit even though Ebbw Vale coach Greg Woods was quick to praise the visitors after his side ruthlessly put them to the sword.

Dawid Rubasniak helped himself to a hat-trick as the Steelmen ran in 11 tries in an emphatic win.

“I watched Neath against Aberavon last Monday and I thought they played really well and put a huge shift in,” said Woods.

“It’s tough on Neath as they are patched together a bit, but we can only play what’s in front of us and I thought we were pretty accurate in the first half.

Rob Howley reveals his future plans and confesses he would happily coach another country against Wales

“We’ve had a good run in the last few games, scoring lots of tries, but in all fairness to Neath they kept battling and we showed them the respect they deserve.”
