Famous Swansea hotel plans for huge upgrade and new rooftop bar

One of Swansea 's oldest and most recognisable hotels could be getting a huge upgrade with several extensions, more rooms and a roof top bar added to the existing building.

The Grand Hotel, in Ivey Place, High Street, is a favourite with tourists and business people arriving in the city from Swansea railway station, which is situated just across the road.

An application for planning permission has been submitted to Swansea Council 's planning department and proposes to add various extensions across five storeys of the building, adding a number of new bedrooms to the hotel, as well as a roof top bar, more conference rooms and a residents lounge.

A number of jobs are expected to be created if the plans go ahead (Western Mail)

Under the plans, another 1970 square metres of floor space would be added to the almost 3000 square metres of the current design.

A roof top bar with open and covered seating areas would also be built, as well as two virtual reality golf booths.

Sketches submitted with the planning permission show that the proposed roof top extension would be visible from the front of the hotel, as you leave Swansea railway station.

It is expected that the extension to the current hotel will provide a number of new full-time and part-time jobs. Currently, there are 20 full-time and 12 part-time employees at the Grand Hotel, under the plans there would be 15 more full-time roles and an extra 12 part-time positions, although it isn't clear what areas of the business the jobs would be in.

The 3-star Grand Hotel first opened in the 1930's and had its last major renovation was in 2004. It currently offers standard and deluxe rooms as well as suite packages and its Queen or King Suites offer a decking area and a private hot tub.
