Famous names stunned as Conor McGregor suffers defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 257

UFC 257 produced a surprise result as Dustin Poirier upset the odds and avenged his 2014 defeat to Conor McGregor.

Celebrities and sports stars worldwide tuned in for the fight and have given their takes on McGregor's second-round TKO defeat to the American.

One Direction star Niall Horan is a big supporter of The Notorious and urged the Dubliner not to quit fighting while praising his opponent.

The singer tweeted: "That was impressive @DustinPoirier! Go again @TheNotoriousMMA @ufc #UFC257 "

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber posted a photo of McGregor holding an Irish flag on Instagram and wrote: "Love this guy win or lose."

Former boxing ace Tony Bellew was impressed by McGregor's demeanour in his post-fight press conference.

He said: "Watching @TheNotoriousMMA in his post fight press conference and he’s just so honest... No excuses no bravado just honesty and admiration for Poirier.. There is so many ways to lose in the Octagon and last night shows this after how the first fight went!"

Belfast boxing star Carl Frampton said: "Calderwood was brilliant. McGregor looked relatively in control until the KO but was extremely gracious in defeat. Chandler was unreal! Does he beat them all including Khabib? #UFC257."

UFC bad-boy Jorge Masvidal was delighted for his compatriot Poirier.

"I’ve known @DustinPoirier since his first or second fight in the ufc and so happy for him to be now one of the best fighters in the world #ufc257," Masvidal tweeted.

UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem said: "Solid performance by @DustinPoirier congrats on the win!! Rest up @TheNotoriousMMA hope to see you back in there soon!! #UFC257."

American actress Rosie Perez was shocked by the against-the-odds win for Poirier.

She tweeted: "I can't believe that just happened! Congrats @DustinPoirier! Took @TheNotoriousMMA out! @ufc #McGregorPoirier #UFC257."

Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao is tipped to take on McGregor in the ring in the near future and he also gave his thoughts following the main event.

The Filipino tweeted: "Beautiful thing about the fight game, anything can happen! Congrats to @DustinPoirier Huge win! #UFC257."

While NBA basketball star Damian Lillard felt McGregor didn't look himself in the run-up to the scrap in Abu Dhabi.

He said: Im a Conor fan... just didn’t look himself to me. Not just because he lost... the whole build up."

Plenty of fight fans had their eye on Khabib Nurmagomedov's social media accounts to find out his reaction to his bitter rival's defeat.

And in the aftermath, Khabib had this message for McGregor.

He said: "This is what happens, when you change your team, leave the sparring partners who made you a champion and sparring with little kids, far away from reality."
