Famous monument to flooded village destroyed by 'mindless vandals'

A famous monument to a flooded Welsh village has been partly knocked down.

The painted message 'Cofiwch Dryweryn' (Remember Tryweryn) – a reference to the Welsh village that was flooded to provide water for Liverpool   – was first daubed on a derelict wall at the side of the A487, overlooking Llanrhystud in Ceredigion , in the early 1960s after the failure of a campaign to prevent the flooding.

The graffiti has since become an unofficial national landmark.

For years campaigners have fought to save the wall which is situated around nine miles south of Aberystwyth.

Pictures on social media seem to show the top of the wall having fallen down.

It comes 24 hours after it was vandalised again, with the word 'agari' written on.

On Friday volunteers were seen painting over the vandalised wall on Friday, and repainting the words 'Cofiwch Dryweryn'.

One user commented: "We fixed it again. No matter how many times, we will be back. Glad to have been there and stood up for our history."

Now, just 24 hours later, it seems vandals have struck again, this time destorying part of the stricture itself.

Earlier this year, vandals painted over with the word 'Elvis' .

But a group of locals who felt passionately about it repainted it in the Famous monument to flooded village is repainted after it was vandalised .

Iestyn Rhys Phillips, 21, from  Carmarthen , said he was driving past when he saw the monument had been defaced.

"We just felt it is a monument to a lot of Welsh people and we just want to see the original again," he said at the time.

"I think it was a shrine of Welsh culture."

Now it seems the famous landmark has been partly knocked down by "mindless vandals".

Dyfed-Powys Police said they are now investigating criminal damage.

Police say they are aware that the memorial has been repeatedly damaged with graffiti over the last few months and that this is causing significant distress both locally and nationally.

Officers are currently at the scene gathering evidence.

Inspector Chris Fraser is leading the response and has said: “I understand the strength of feeling about the Cofiwch Dryweryn memorial, and that repeated damage to it has caused significant upset in the community.

“I want to give reassurance that we are taking this matter seriously, and will carry out a full investigation in to this mindless damage.

“I’d also like to appeal for anyone with information about the criminal damage to come forward and speak to us by calling 101.”
