Famous Merseyside fort to welcome visitors back soon

An historic Merseyside landmark will be reopening to the public in the Spring of this year.

Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton posted a message on its Facebook page to confirm the reopening. It said: "We are excited to announce that Fort Perch Rock will be reopening in Spring 2022.

"Alongside the existing exhibitions we will be welcoming new exhibitions and attractions complimented by a new programme of events through the year. The Fort will also be available for private hire."

The Wirral fort was originally conceived early in the 19th century by Liverpool merchants who were concerned about a possible French invasion during the Napoleonic wars.

However building work didn't get under way until many years later and it was finally completed in 1829. It became known as the "Little Gibraltar of the Mersey."

The fort was decommissioned by the War Office in 1956 and passed through various hands until it was sold to the Darroch family, who are the current custodians.

It is home to a number of permanent maritime and aviation based museum displays.

Many people took to social media to welcome the news the attraction would be reopening when it was posted on Facebook.

One said: "That's fantastic news, well done. I can't wait to call in again."

Another said: "Brilliant news! Haven't been in since I was a kid so really looking forward to going back inside."

While another said: "Thank goodness, have missed taking the grandchildren and great-grandson."
