Famous feline Grumpy Cat has died as family say 'her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere'

Grumpy Cat, the Instagram star dubbed the world's most famous feline, has died.

The family of the furry friend, who amassed 2.4m followers on the photo sharing platform, announced the news in a heartbreaking post today.

The Snowshoe Siamese, known the world over for her unimpressed face, passed away after complications from a recent urinary tract infection aged seven.

Beginning the statement, the family said: "Some days are grumpier than others..."

It then continued: "Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome.

"She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.

"Grumpy's Family - Tabatha, Bryan and Chrysta."

Many of us would take offence at being considered 'grumpy' but internet sensation Grumpy Cat embraced all of it.

The lovable feline, who lives in Phoenix, Arizona, and is also known as Tardar Sauce, found fame in 2012 after her owner's brother Bryan posted a photo of her on Reddit.

Within just 48 hours she had more than a million views.

And it didn't take long before she was of the most recognisable cats in the world, and even stared in her own film Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever.

Fans have flooded social media expressing their sadness at the news.

One comment read: "We are so sorry for your loss. Sending lots of love. She was one of a kind and the world will miss her sweet grumpy face very much!"

Another said: "Legends never die. Rest in peace Grumpy Cat."

"Today is a sad day. RIP Grumpy Cat," commented a third.
