Famous Dublin pub Whelan's heartbreaking photos of dozens of unused kegs waiting to be returned

The coronavirus crisis has us all missing a tipple in our favourite boozer as pubs remain closed until August 10.

And these heartbreaking photos of iconic Dublin bar Whelan's returning dozens of kegs full of unused beer has us pining for the pints that could have been.

The Wexford Street venue shared pictures of the stock out on the street waiting  to be returned to suppliers Diageo on social media this afternoon.

They said: "Farewell sweet pints, the pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.

"Diageo stock being returned to be exchanged for fresh pints when we reopen."

The photos had punters pining for all those missed pints and nights of craic, chat and dancing at the famous old watering hole.

Noelle Fox wrote: "That’s a punch in the gut to see. Sweet dreams sweet pints, I shall dream of you tonight."

Damien Desmond Downes quipped: "From the brewer straight to the sewer, such a sad lamentable waste."

Laura Stopforth said: "We feel your pain guys and equally long for the joy again."

And spare a thought for poor Paul Quirke who posted: "This is heartbreaking...especially on my birthday."

We feel your pain Paul and we can't wait until we can enjoy a tasty pint of plain in one of the city's many friendly bars again.

Dublin Live understands the returned booze would be repurposed into a number of agricultural uses such as animal feed and willow plantation.

A Diageo spokesman said: "Our first priority is that we want people to keep safe and follow all the national guidelines.

"Quality is always top of mind for us and when pubs reopen, we want to make sure consumers will have a beautiful, great tasting pint of Guinness waiting for them.

"We have been supporting the pub trade from the outset of this crisis through a number of measures and have comprehensive plans in place for line cleaning and the return of aged kegs.”
