Famous actor’s jacket sells for £35k at auction held from Bristol auctioneer’s living room

As Jason King, actor Peter Wyngarde, played a crime investigating ladies' man with a big moustache and a penchant for dandy clothes.

And now someone is the proud owner of a snakeskin jacket worn by the 1970s smooth dude - whose groovy persona was the inspiration for Mike Myers' comic creation Austin Powers.

The jacket was sold online by East Bristol Auctions, conducted by auctioneer Andrew Stowe from his living room, because of coronavirus social-distancing restrictions.

Actor Wyngarde, who starred in ITV's Department S and the spin-off Jason King, as well as Dr Who and Flash Gordon, died aged 90 in January 2018.

The auction included the jacket as well as a "best dressed man" award presented to the star in 1970.

The sale raised £35,000 and the sartorial elegance award went under the hammer for £2,200.

Mr Stowe, from East Bristol Auctions, said: "It was a wonderful auction and I hope some of the lots have put smiles on faces - something we all very much need right now.

"This auction was conducted from a laptop on my dining room table - quite different to the usual auction room setting, but we sold every single lot in the sale.

"I think this may have been the first live auction ever conducted from an auctioneer's living room."

A pair of prop glasses used in Wyngarde's television series sold for £700 and a personal edition of his banned 1970 album When Sex Leers its Inquisitive Head, sold for £600.

Wyngarde was born in Marseille, France, to an English father and French mother.

He died in a West London hospital, his agent Thomas Bowington told Variety.

Mr Bowington said: “Peter Wyngarde passed away peacefully in his sleep early evening Monday at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

"He was one of the most original and truly great actors I’ve ever seen and by far the most exceptional man I have ever met.”
