Family woken to find knife-wielding robber who threatened to kill mum if she didn't hand over car keys

A family were woken up to find a knife wielding robber who threatened to kill a mum unless she handed over her car keys.

Kyle Newlands, 32, has been jailed following the terrifying ordeal at their home in Rochdale.

He broke into the house before 6am, and threatened the 51-year-old mum with a knife.

Newlands left with their VW Tiguan.

Sentencing him to eight-and-a-half years in prison, Judge Tina Landale told Newlands: "Your conduct represented gravely threatening and frightening behaviour.

"They don't feel safe in their own homes. They feel they will never get over what you caused them."

Minshull Street Crown Court heard that Newlands got into the property at 5.40am on May 14 last year, after arriving in a car.

After being woken up by the sound of him gaining entry, the mum was confronted by Newlands.

He told her that he would kill her if she didn't hand over her car keys, prosecutor Duncan Wilcock said.

He also threatened to come back the day after.

Newlands had a seven-inch blade, and held it towards her.

The woman's daughter, then 17, also became involved in a 'struggle' with Newlands, causing him to fall down the stairs.

During the incident he took the keys for the VW, and also tried to steal a bag containing a laptop.

He drove off in the car.

The court heard that the two women were not physically hurt, but have been psychologically affected by their ordeal.

The mum was later able to pick out Newlands in a video identity parade.

Judge Landale said Newlands' only mitigation in the case was that he pleaded guilty.

He admitted robbery, possession of a bladed article and handling stolen goods.

Defending, Hunter Gray said Newlands entered the property with the intention of committing a burglary, and had the knife with him to gain entry.

He said the defendant was under pressure to break in by others who he owed a 'debt' to.

Newlands is 'deeply ashamed' of his actions has displayed 'regret' and 'remorse', Mr Gray said.

Passing sentence, the judge said the incident had a 'devastating' impact on the family.

Newlands, of Hebble Butt Close, Milnrow, will have to serve two-thirds of his sentence in prison.
