Family with house people travel 'miles' to see take bill 'on the chin'

Dovecot's own 'haunted house' that people travel for miles to see has once again returned.

After a four year break, Dave Russell and family have transformed their home on Grant Road in Dovecot for a couple of nights, in the hopes of raising money for charity. For 12 years, Dave has taken Halloween decorations to the next level and transformed his garden and home for the community to enjoy.

But tomorrow, the spectacular event will be back until Tuesday, promising to be bigger and better to raise donations for Zoe's Place and Claire's House. Monday will also see a special guest, as Dave dons the stilts to impress all.

He told the ECHO: "This is the first time in four years that we are back and we've used part of our neighbours garden. We've got a 50ft tunnel to walk through and there's different things so not every room is the same. Every year we change it, we never do the same thing twice."

The dad-of-five said after months of planning, and two weeks prepping, the event will be held for the community from October 31. He added: "We've always done it for the local community, we've never charged, it's completely free.

"We've always took the bill on the chin but people have been saying to do a collection for charity so this year we decided to raise for the kids. I've got five kids myself and so we chose the children's charities because they are only young and we want to give them something to appreciate.

"Zoe's Place and Claire's House are on our doorstep and it's an event for the kids so we thought why not raise money for the kids. We've put so much effort in, I'm even going to be walking around as a Gruffalo, 15ft high.

"The community loves it. We've had people in the past walking for miles with their kids. One guy walked five miles with his two kids because he couldn't afford a taxi and I was just blown away. It's an old Victorian house, 18th century and looks the part."
