Family watch in terror as daughter plunges to death during 18th birthday skydive

The family of an 18 year old girl watched in terror as she plunged to her death when her parachute failed to open during a birthday skydive.

Vanessa Ivonne Melendez Cardenas turned 18 over the weekend and decided to celebrate with a parachute jump over Tequesquitengo, in Morelos, Mexico .

Along with four other skydivers, the high school student and her instructor, Mauricio Gutiérrez Castillo, 34, prepared for the jump on Sunday.

But shocking footage filmed from the ground, which the Mirror Online has edited, shows the moment the pair fall 1,300ft after their parachute failed to open.

The four others could be seen safely descending from the sky.

The footage shows family members asking someone if 'Liz' is about to land, referring to Melendez Cardenas.

A man, who has not been identified, says: "My God, I hope that's Liz, come this way" as another person is close to landing.

Shortly after, the man notices that 'Liz' is not among the group of skydivers.

He shouts out "no, no, no" when he realises that she is missing.

Vanessa and Mauricio's bodies were eventually found in a grass field.

The video shows distraught family members looking over their bodies.

The company who organised the skydive insists that the fall was not an accident caused by malfunctioning equipment.

Jorge Gaitán, the director of Albatros Parachuting, believes someone may have manipulated the release mechanism.

He said: "It wasn't equipment failure or anything like that. It surely had to do with someone who was on that flight, who manipulated and activated the release mechanism."

"'That doesn't end up happening by accident: it is caused by a human. We are in those investigations. We still do not know what happened."

The skydiving company, which does not offer insurance as it is considered an extreme sport, said it was activated at a level where it "was impossible for the parachute to respond."
