Family trying to visit Lake District escorted back to motorway by police

A family-of-six were escorted back to the M6 by police, after trying to visit the Lake District during the coronavirus lockdown.

The family were stopped by officers at Windermere and told to go home to Leigh - over 80 miles away.

Cumbria Police revealed what had happened on their twitter account.

The force said 'all routes' into the Lakes were being policed to combat the spread of coronavirus - reports the Manchester Evening News.

Police also shared a photograph of the car stopped, with two adults and four children inside.

Officers stopped the family's car at Windermere and even escorted them back to the M6 motorway.

Cumbria Roads Policing Unit revealed details of their stop on Twitter.

The unit said: "This family of six (2 adults, 4 children) had come from Leigh, Lancs, for a trip out to the Lake District today.

"Stopped at Windermere and advised to return.

"We are policing all routes into the lakes.

"Escorted back to the motorway. #stayhomesavelives."

The incredible scene played out more than two weeks after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a lockdown across the UK to save lives and prevent the NHS from being overwhelmed.

Police said the Lake District National Park 'was closed' in the days after the lockdown was announced.

It followed a 'significant number of tourists' ignoring Government advice by visiting Cumbria during the first lockdown weekend.

A message on the Visit Cumbria website reads: "Please respect Cumbria Police, Government and Cumbria Tourism advice not to visit the Lake District and Cumbria during the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis.

"All events have been cancelled across the Lake District and Cumbria.

"Visitor attractions, restaurants, pubs, leisure facilities, spas etc in the Lake District and Cumbria have closed.

"Non essential shops and businesses have closed.

"A national lockdown has been imposed by the Government, which also applies to the whole of Cumbria, including the fells."
