Family tree revealed for RTE drama Smother as many viewers left confused

Since premiering last week, RTÈ's new drama Smother impressed viewers with its moody atmosphere, macabre mystery, and solid performance.

However, like so many thrillers and mysteries, the plot was quite intricate with alliances, secrets, and plenty of characters playing a pivotal role.

In terms of the general synopsis, Smother unfolds after Val Ahern’s husband, Denis, is found dead at a foot of a cliff close to her home the morning after a family party.

Val begins to pick through the events of the previous night to examine Denis’s relationships with his children, step-children and his siblings in order to find out who might have been responsible for his brutal death.

The deeper that the matriarch delves into her family’s secrets, the more she realises how her late husband’s controlling and manipulative behaviour had affected each member of the family in their own way.

However, the litany of family members and intricate plotting at play prompted one social media user to jokingly say "Jesus, the plot has more strands to it than a HSE vaccine procurement plan!"

For those that watched the opening episode and might feel a bit confused, producer Rebecca O'Flanagan shared the following infographic online and it's bound to clear some things up about the Ahern family.

In terms of tonight's episode, the synopsis states: " Val struggles to understand Graces recent erratic actions, while the local Gardaí look closer at the Ahern family as the investigation moves away from treating Denis death as an accident.

Smother continues tonight at 9.30 on RTE1.
