Family trapped in 'Tower of Terror' lift in heatwave while on Liver Building tour

A family spent over an hour stuck inside a lift during a tour of the Royal Liver Building.

Martyn Andrews told the ECHO that his experience at the Royal Liver Building's RLB360 tour reminded him of the "Tower of Terror" ride at Disney World in Orlando.

The 42-year-old said that the lift appear to "drop" twice before becoming stuck for over an hour.

He had arranged a family visit to the world famous building yesterday morning ( May 31) to celebrate his dad's 70th birthday.

The RLB360 tour takes guests inside the building's historic clock tower which offers stunning views of the entire Liverpool City Region from the 15th floor.

Martyn said he had to take the party for a couple of brandies after their "ordeal" at the waterfront building which is one of Liverpool's Three Graces.

The family boarded the lift at around 10.40am and were freed by the emergency services at around 12.05pm.

Martyn said: "After a health and safety induction we all got into a fairly small lift to take us up to the top of the building.

"Everything seemed to be fine until the lift suddenly dropped and shuddered. This happened twice before we came to a standstill.

"It felt like the Tower of Terror ride in Orlando.

"There were two numbers to call in the event of an emergency - security and reception. We tried both but could not get through.

"It was a really warm day and the lift was very small. "

Martyn said that after around 30 minutes he decided to call the fire service, and the family were able to leave the lift by 12.05pm.

He said: "It was just frustrating that the security and reception were not picking up the phone. We heard some faint shouting which sounded like staff trying to reach out to us.

"The intercom in the lift did not work either.

"I had three pensioners with me and a friend who became very upset. She was in tears.

"When we finally made it out of there I had take the guests for a stiff drink. They needed a brandy to steady their nerves.

"It was just a bit ironic that after a health and safety lecture we had to experience this.

"However we did manage to sing happy birthday to my dad inside the lift."

A spokesperson for RLB360 said: "We have apologised to Mr Andrews and his family while reassuring him that this was an isolated incident.

"It was due to a technical fault and unfortunately, as we are only a tenant, we had to alert the Royal Liver Building owners who then contacted their technicians immediately to rectify the situation

"The Royal Liver Building lift operators arrived as quickly as they could despite it being a bank holiday and we're really glad to say that everyone was safe.

"We have spoken to Mr Andrews and his family several times since while sitting down with them on Monday whereby they assured us they were all okay.

"A full refund, RLB360 gifts and complimentary tickets have been offered to the family.

"We have been assured by the Royal Liver Building technical operators that the lifts are in good working order and are regularly serviced to ensure this is the case."

A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed they were called out to the Royal Liver Building following reports of five people trapped in a lift.

A spokesperson said:" Crews were alerted at 11.12am and on scene at 11.17am. One fire engine attended.

"Following liaison with building staff, crews located the lift car stuck between the fourth and fifth floor. Two firefighters entered the lift motor room and lowered the lift to the third floor.

"Crews then released the five people from the lift. All were unharmed.

"Fire crews left the scene at 12.15pm."
