Family take on Tough Mudder in honour of East Kilbride primary school teacher

The family of a much-loved teacher went through the wringer to donate nearly £5000 to Kilbryde Hospice.

Maggie Kennedy, who spent many years teaching in St Vincent’s Primary in Greenhills and St Leonard’s Primary as a deputy headteacher, passed away earlier this year and received care from the hospice in the grounds of Hairmyres Hospital.

And some of her family decided to well and truly push themselves to the limit by taking part in a challenging Tough Mudder event and asking people to sponsor them.

Even grandson, Jack, got in on the act, taking part in the children’s event.

Team Maggie was made up Maggie’s children Lauren, Karen and Ross as well as nephew Joseph Kennedy.

They set out to raise £500 and managed to smash their target, raising a phenomenal £4560.

Maggie’s children said: “We are delighted to have raised such a fantastic amount for Kilbryde Hospice and are overwhelmed at the support received from everyone who donated.

“The care and compassion shown by Kilbryde Hospice, not just to mum, but to her family and friends who were visiting was outstanding and we cannot thank the hospice enough.

“The service they provide is second to none and we feel very lucky that this service is available locally.”

They added: “Mum was loved so much by all her family and friends and is greatly missed.

“She was also a well-known teacher in East Kilbride and spent many years teaching in St Vincent’s Primary and St Leonard’s Primary as a deputy headteacher, before moving to St Ninian’s Primary in Hamilton to be the head teacher.

“We know she inspired many people throughout the years and will not be forgotten.”

Karlyn Robertson, assistant fundraising manager at the hospice, said: “We are so grateful to Maggie’s family who have raised a phenomenal amount of money for Kilbryde Hospice.

“We are so pleased to hear that Maggie’s family were comforted by the services provided by our team and for them to now choose to support us is very greatly appreciated.”
