Family still searching for answers over Johnny Connelly's death describe 'living hell' one year on

The family of Johnny Connelly have spoken of their "living hell" at not knowing what happened a year after his body was found in the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Johnny was reported missing by his family when he didn’t return home from a day out with his friend in Glasgow city centre on Monday, July 15.

His body was recovered from Speirs Wharf a week later on Monday, July 22.

Johnny had suffered injuries to his head and body, prompting questions over the nature of his death from his heartbroken family.

Mum Norah McCluskey spoke this afternoon at a wreath laying ceremony, held at the spot where Johnny's body was found. The tribute was held a year to the day since he was first reported missing.

Friends and family gathered to pay their respects, lighting candles and laying flowers in tribute to the 28-year-old from Milton, as Norah gave a speech thanking all those who attended and reiterating her family's desire for answers.

Speaking to Glasgow Live following the ceremony, Norah said: "It's been a living hell. I want to look whoever is responsible for this in the eyes.

"They knew my boy was in the canal that night and they left them in there and they never reported it to the emergency services or nothing. It's terrible.

How could you live with that on your conscience? I couldn't. If it had been an accident or an illness it would have been different. But this is not normal grief.

"He was just making his way home to his mum that night. His twin sister was due a wee baby, she was seven months pregnant when this happened. And he was looking forward to being an uncle again. It's sad."

Mum Norah was joined by her two daughters as she lay the wreath next to the canal.

The wreath included a card which read: To Johnny. Proud to call you my son. RIP. Till we meet again brother xxx".

Michelle Connelly called for anyone with information on her brother's death to come forward.

She told Glasgow Live: "We still need information, we need as much information as we can get. We want justice. We want whoever it was to pay for it.

"I'd beg anyone with information to come forward so they don't do this to someone else and its not somebody else's family that has to be broken like us.

"We've been robbed of memories for the rest of our lives over something that was so silly and could have been prevented."

Anyone who may have any information is asked to call CID officers at Maryhill Police Station via 101, quoting incident number 3452 of 22 July 2019.
