Family say Scottish tourist attacked at Ibiza ATM is on the mend but still in coma

The distraught family of a man who was viciously attacked while on holiday in Ibiza say he is on the road to recovery but remains in a coma.

, from Stewarton, East Ayrshire, has been fighting for his life in a Spanish hospital after being punched in the head whilst on holiday in Ibiza on August 28.

The 28-year-old had to be put into a medically induced coma and was left with bleeding on the brain and a serious lung infection.

Last week doctors told his heartbroken mum and aunt Paula Marshall, who have flown out to be by his bedside, that the swelling on his brain is "worse than they thought" and he will remain in a coma for longer.

Gavin, an electrician, was then struck down with a lung infection and the family faced an anxious few days as they prayed he would pull through.

But this week Gavin's aunt Paula said the swelling on Gavin's brain is "under control" and doctors have told the family he is getting stronger every day.

Paula said: "I'm happy to say that the swelling on Gavin's brain is now under control and doctors are happy with his progress over the last few days.

"We have had a few little blips, with a serious lung infection being the most memorable, it gave us quite a scare, but he is recovering from this slowly but surely.

"Gavin remains in the medically induced coma for now, but doctors hope to start reducing the sedatives soon if all goes well.

"Kirsty and I are telling him about everyone's well wishes, support and fundraising. I even learnt some Arsenal football songs to sing to him."

Gavin was attacked after heading to a cash point for money just seven hours before he was due to fly home from the party island.

A fundraising drive to support Gavin and his family has reached more than £41,000 of a £60,000 target after it was revealed he had not taken out travel insurance before he flew to Spain.

The appeal has attracted donations and well wishes from more than 2,000 people in the space of 19 days.
