Family say it's 'early days' for girl, 15, shot at bus stop

The family of a 15-year-old schoolgirl shot as she waited for a bus said it is "early days" in her recovery.

On Tuesday, police and paramedics were called to Upper Warwick Street in Toxteth, at around 5.10pm, after it was reported multiple shots were fired.

At the scene they found the teenage girl had suffered serious injuries after being shot in the upper body.

One family member, who did not want to be named to protect the teen's identity, said the schoolgirl's recovery is "very up and down at the minute".

According to the family, the teenager could need an operation on her spine as following the incident it has "damaged the nerve endings in her arm and hand".

They said the schoolgirl has lost sensations such as grip due to her injuries and is "not fully awake all the time".

Speaking to the ECHO, they said: "So she's stable at the moment, she is off the ventilator, she had problems last night with her oxygen levels and stuff like that after they took her off the ventilator.

"She's been reviewed by neurologists who are waiting for the swelling to go down on her spine before they make a decision on whether she needs an operation on her spine.

"It's damaged the nerve endings in her arm and hand, so she has lost sensation like grip and stuff like that.

"They're re-evaluating everyday whether they are going to operate on her and obviously just hoping the hole in her lung heals and they're monitoring it collapsing and stuff."

The family member described the teen as "shy" and hardworking who has "big dreams" and "aspirations" for her future.

However, they said they were worried about her future and how the incident will impact her such as whether she will be able to return to school.

A GoFundMe page has now been set up by family member Mal Lee to raise money for her future and recovery.

They added: "We know the recovery is going to be a long process and is she ever going to be able to go back to school now?

"Is she going to suffer mentally from it?

"So we're looking at will she need to be tutored at home, just all kind of things that are going to affect her, it's not just about the physicality, it's everything else like the PTSD and stuff like that she is going to suffer.

"Just give her things like a computer and stuff like that, so she can do her work from home."

Writing on the GofundMe page, Mal said: "This appeal will not mend the horrific injuries the stray bullet has caused, including the damage that it has left behind on her innocent young body.

"She will be suffering for many years to come and will undoubtedly suffer flashbacks for some time, she will require all her strength to get through this with plenty of family support.

"I have started this fundraising appeal to help give her a better quality of life and help with the support that will take away the stress and trauma from the youngster and her family."

Three people were arrested in connection with the incident.

A 27-year-old man from Toxteth, was arrested last night, on Wednesday, March 2, on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm without a certificate.

Previously, a 21-year-old man from Toxteth was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life on Tuesday evening.

A 60-year-old man from Toxteth who had earlier been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has now been released under investigation.

At a press conference Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Kameen said police believe multiple shots were fired by one or more people.

The shots are believed to have been fired by people who were riding electric bikes at the time of the incident.

Police are looking for people on 'up to four bikes' that were dressed in dark clothing, and wearing face masks or face coverings, like a balaclava.

A short time after the shooting, a 21-year-old man turned up at hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand. His injuries are not life threatening.

Police are keeping an "open mind" but believe that these two shooting incidents are linked.

Police are continuing to urge anyone who has information, witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam footage to come forward as their information could greatly assist the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 anonymously quoting log 647 of 1st March.
