Family's trip to Cornwall ruined by 'disgraceful' £1,800 'luxury' lodge

A furious holidaymaker who forked out £1,800 for a ‘luxury' Cornwall lodge has branded it “an absolute disgrace".

The guest claims his trip was ruined by the lack of running water, rude staff and ongoing construction work.

He has visited the area twice a year for 15 years - but was stunned at the state of Retallack Resort & Spa in St Columb Major.

He's since shared photos showing discarded rubbish, rotting decking and a broken fridge door, reports Cornwall Live.

The accommodation is operated by Aria Resorts, which boasts a portfolio across the UK.

But the guest, from Derbyshire, described Retallack as “an absolute disgrace of a luxury holiday site”.

“On arrival at our luxury lodge, it was evident immediately that this was badly in need of extensive repair," he said.

"The rotten handrails, the overgrown grounds and the flaky paintwork all seriously failed the wow factor test.

“On entering the property, all seemed ok in terms of size and decor but then the biggest disappointment of all, we had no running water.

"A seven hour drive to our luxury lodge, only to find no running water in the property.

"We paid £1,800 for four of us and for the hot tub as well. I like to enjoy a bit of luxury when I go away but it was far from that.

“Obviously upset, we continued our tour and found the hot tub we had paid extra for completely empty."

He continued: “So, we went to reception to question this and got told this happens every time on changeover day, and that they would send some bottled water to flush the toilets with.

“In disbelief by now, having almost been shouted down by staff for having the cheek to ask why we had no water and an empty hot tub, we headed back with the promise that we would have water by the next day.”

The guest added that running water did return on the Sunday but by Monday morning it had gone again, leaving his family unable to use the toilets and showers.

He claims the water continued to dip and out and the hot tub the family paid extra for was not usable all week despite attempts to fix it.

He added: “To summarise, the luxury lodge was far from it. Everything from the fridge door being broken to the rotting decking.

“The staff on reception were rude and confrontational and the street lighting was dangerous, falling apart and some lights not working.

“All the while, building work was going on at a large scale over the fence from 8am every day, which if they are extending the site, I find this difficult to comprehend when they cannot supply the current site with running water.

“We have stayed on numerous high quality holiday sites in the Cornwall area, one of which, the Retallack definitely is not.”

The guest, who visited within the last fortnight, also claims he has not been reimbursed for the hot tub.

Aria Resorts acknowledged Cornwall Live's request for comment on Tuesday morning.

As of Friday no comment had been received despite numerous calls and emails.
