The contractor killed in an incident at Tata Steel in Port Talbot was a rugby-loving "doting dad" and grandfather, his heartbroken family have said.

Justin Day, 44, was working at the steelworks on Wednesday afternoon  when the incident happened shortly before 2pm .

On Thursday Mr Day's family issued a tribute via South Wales Police , saying: “Justin was a family man who loved his family so much, he was hardworking to provide the best for his family.

“He was a doting dad to his daughter Keeley and granddaughter Lyla-Jay who he idolised. He was a passionate rugby fan and supported the Ospreys and Wales and had been looking forward to the World Cup.

“He was so proud of his sons Korey and Kaylan and enjoyed watching them playing rugby. Korey plays for Vardre youth and Kaylan Bonymaen under-13s. He will be missed so much by his family.”

Mr Day, from the Llansamlet area of Swansea , worked for  Caerphilly -based Mii Engineering, who said they are devastated by his death .

This was the scene at Tata in the aftermath of the tragedy:

South Wales Police is currently investigating the circumstances of Mr Day's death with support from the Health and Safety Executive.

fundraising page  has been set up to raise money to support Mr Day's family, raising nearly £2,000 of its £3,000 target already.

Matthew Moody, Mii's finance director, said: "We are devastated about the incident in which Justin lost his life. Our thoughts go out to his family, his colleagues and his friends."

The tragedy is the second in less than a month at the steelworks. Earlier this month contractor Adam Llewellyn, from Bridgend,  died following an incident  involving a quad bike on the grounds of Eglwys Nunudd Reservoir, Margam, on September 5.
