Family's hell after remorseful teen fined £10k 'they couldn't afford' as No 10 staff partied

A remorseful teenager who hosted a house party during covid restrictions faced a £10k 'superfine' when police were called.

In May 2021 - just weeks after No.10's alleged party in April - an 18-year-old invited some friends around to his house in the Merseyside area one weekend whilst his parents were away.

Kirsty Brimelow QC, who represented the teenager, said a £10k fine was originally issued, a huge amount which the family did not have.

The teenager's grandparents were even going to 'pool their pensions' to pay the huge fine.

Ms Brimelow said this is just "another story of what was happening outside Downing Street".

Downing Street has come under fire after recent claims that staff hosted multiple drinks events - one being in May 2020, when the country was in a strict national lockdown.

Fresh claims have also emerged that staff at Downing Street 'drank alcohol into the night' at two leaving parties the evening before the queen mourned Prince Philip's death in April 2021.

The two events are said to have started separately and later merged.

At that time, England was in step two of the Government's road map out of lockdown, which limited socialising to groups of six people or two households outdoors.

The claims have resulted in outrage across the country with calls for the Prime Minister to resign.

An 18-year-old in the Merseyside area is just one person to have faced a fine over allegedly breaching the then-restrictions.

On May 2, 2021, more people attended the party than originally invited in a Merseyside area and the police were called.

Taking to social media, Kirsty Brimelow QC said the regulations at the time included a prohibition on an organised gathering of more than 30 indoors and it was believed there were 30-40 people indoors and outdoors.

She said the 18-year-old was "very remorseful" and was "starting a career which might have closed to him if he hadn’t paid the FPN".

She went on to say that neither he nor his family had the £10,000.

Ms Brimelow wrote: "I represented an 18-year-old who was issued a “superfine” of £10K. Alleged breach of the Regulations was on 2 May 2021.

"He had some mates around his house on a weekend night when his parents were away. More came than invited. Police called. They thought there were 30-40 indoors and outside.

"Regulations: prohibition on organising gathering of more than 30 indoors.

"18-year-old very remorseful. He was starting a career which might have closed to him if he hadn’t paid the FPN, then been taken to magistrates court and convicted (no appeal process). Neither he nor family had £10k."

Ms Brimelow added: "His grandparents were going to pool their pensions to help pay. I worked (unpaid) for the family making written representations and then telephoning to persuade the police to withdraw the £10k FPN.

Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie were among around 40 people to attend a drinks event in the Downing Street garden during the UK's first national #COVID19 lockdown. (ITV)

"Police who attended said he was “a lovely lad”. But there was nothing they could do.

"Eventually, after much stress, the FPN was withdrawn and substituted with an FPN of £200 (£100 if paid in 14 days). Family paid immediately and their nightmare ended. Much gratitude to Merseyside Police on that occasion.

"Just another story of what was happening outside Downing Street."
