Family's heartbreak after couple die in M56 horror crash

A grieving family today said their parents "touched the hearts" of everyone who knew them, after they both died in a crash on the M56.

A 56-year-old woman died at the scene of the multi-vehicle smash on Thursday September 19 between junction 9, Warrington, and junction 10 Stretton Interchange.

Six further people were injured in the smash at 5.20pm which saw two air ambulances land on the motorway and closed the M56 for more than 12 hours.

A second person, a 62-year-old man, died in hospital on Sunday, September 22.

Today it was confirmed the two people who died were married couple Richard and Angela Wong (pictured).

Their "devastated" family issued a poignant tribute to the couple, who had been married for 37, years and leave behind two children and two grandchildren.

The family said today: "They touched the hearts and enriched the lives of everyone who knew them.

“Our parents leave behind two children, two grandchildren and an extensive family and group of friends who are all devastated by their sudden loss.

“They will be truly missed by everyone who knew them."

And they added: "We are forever grateful to have had them as our wonderful parents. We love them very much and they will be forever in our hearts."

Cheshire Police, who confirmed the couple lived in Manchester, urged witnesses to come forward as the investigation continues.

Reports claimed that the westbound carriageway was also closed for a short time to allow two air ambulances to land close to the crash site.

A number of fire crews were also sent to the scene on the M56 and police there managed to release and turn around some of the trapped traffic.

Dozens of people on social media sent thoughts and wishes to those involved in the crash and stuck in traffic queues.

After around five hours of the road being closed, queues of traffic stretched back for 10 miles with congestion being reported back to Preston Brook.

It also affected traffic on the M6 heading southbound.
