Family’s heartache as teenage schoolgirl dies in farm accident

A 14-year-old schoolgirl has tragically died following a farm accident outside Newry.

Abbie Nummy was killed after an incident in the Bernish area on Saturday, November 30.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland confirmed yesterday that it had launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her tragic death.

Independent Newry councillor Gavin Malone told BelfastLive that the community will "give full support to the Nummy family".

He said: "This is just such heartbreaking news to come to such a well-respected family in the Newry community. We are all devastated and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

"I have spoken with the family and they are just heartbroken. It's very sad. The Nummy family are hugely respected. They are lovely people. The community will rally round them and give them all the support they need. It's hard to really put it in to words to be honest."

Abbie's funeral will be held on Tuesday (December 3) in St May's Parish Church, Newry.

Her funeral notice read: "(Newry) November 30, 2019, (suddenly), result of an accident, in her 14th year. Much loved daughter of Andrew and Lorna, loving sister of Jamie and Darcie, 16 Altnaveigh Road, Newry.

"Funeral service on Tuesday at 1.00pm in St. Mary's Parish Church, Newry. Followed by interment in Presbyterian Cemetery, Armagh Road, Newry.

"Family flowers only. Donations in lieu, if desired, payable to Air Ambulance NI, c/o John M Murdoch Funeral Director, Brookside, 125 Armagh Road, Newry BT35 6PU.

"Lovingly remembered by her sorrowing Dad, Mum, Brother, Sister, Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and entire family circle."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following a sudden death in a tragic accident at a farm in Newry on Saturday.

"The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the circumstances."
