Family's heartache as Bristol's speedboat killer could soon be freed

Bristol's speedboat killer Jack Shepherd is set to be freed half-way through his six-year prison sentence, reports suggest. He was jailed for manslaughter by gross negligence after flipping his boat on the Thames and killing his date Charlotte Brown in 2015.

But it is claimed he is set to leave jail in the next 10 months - sooner than expected. Shepherd, originally from Exeter before he moved to Bristol, is currently serving a six-year determinate sentence. This refers to the maximum time he could serve in prison, but according to reports he will likely be freed in January, reports the Mail.

Charlotte’s dad Graham told the Sun: “It goes to show how outrageous our criminal justice system is. The family is devastated. We will never get over it.

“She would’ve been 31 this month. We miss her terribly. Shepherd has shown no remorse.”

The former £150,000-a-year IT consultant was also sentenced for glassing a former soldier while he was on bail for manslaughter. Shepherd fled to Georgia before his trial, but was jailed in his absence. The dad-of-one was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence in July 2018, when he was aged 30.

A Ministry of Justice (MoJ) source told the Sun: "He has kept his head down and quietly done his time. He knows that a determinate sentence means his case doesn’t have to go to the Parole Board for its approval.

"If he behaves then there is no reason to keep him in jail beyond his halfway point. He will be free to simply walk out the door."

An MoJ spokesperson told The Mirror Online it cannot comment on individual cases and that determinate sentences are decided by independent judges.
