Family's fight to free Welsh dad from Yemen jail after he was locked up for having a British passport

A Welsh man has spent two years in a Yemen jail for having a British passport in what his family described as "appalling" conditions.

Luke Symons was accused of being a spy when he was found with a British passport in Yemen in 2015.

Luke had travelled across the Middle East when he was 20 and met his now wife in Yemen.

The former barber, now 27, was arrested but has never been charged. His family claim he has been mistreated in prison.

Luke family's at home in Ely, Cardiff , said they feel let down by the UK Government for not helping to secure his release.

His grandfather Robert Cummings said the family have been "destroyed" by his imprisonment thousands of miles away in Yemen.

"It's killed our family," he said. "We can't sit down for a meal without mentioning Luke, we can't have a cup of tea without Luke coming up."

Mr Cummings said the last time Luke spoke with his family in Cardiff was around six weeks ago.

"He says he's okay because they're [prison guards] there. But I know Luke like the back of my hand, I know he's not really."

Mr Cummings said: "He was just stopped at random and they found his British passport.

"That's the only reason he's in jail."

Luke's family said he is being held in Sanaʽa which is the largest city in the country.

Mr Cummings, who has Yemeni relatives, said: "He has been living in appalling conditions and the situation is getting desperate.

"His family in Cardiff are very worried and anxious about Luke's predicament."

He said they are being updated by Luke's family in Yemen and by the Yemeni community in Cardiff but accused the UK Government of not helping to secure his release.

War broke out in Yemen in 2015 between the Yemeni Government and the Houthi armed movement, who have imprisoned Luke.

British sales of arms to Saudi Arabia, who are supporters of the Yemeni Government, have meant there is suspicion of British citizens in the country.

Mr Cummings said he has seen an internal letter from the Houthis which states they have found no evidence of any "suspicious act" and that he should be released.

The letter is dated from 2018 but Luke remains in prison.

Luke's family are now raising £10,000 to pay for flights to bring him and his family home.

They plan to get Luke to a nearby country with a British embassy such as Egypt.

Mr Cummings said Cardiff West MP Kevin Brennan has supported the family since Luke was imprisoned.

Mr Brennan said: "This is really a tragic case of a young Cardiff man who is being held captive, simply for having a British passport. Luke has done nothing wrong and the UK Government needs to do all it can to help bring Luke home.

“Last week I raised Luke's case in the House of Commons and the Home Office Minister has agreed to a meeting with Luke's family to discuss what can be done.

“There is a small window of opportunity to help bring Luke home and I hope people will visit his crowdfunding page which has been setup by his grandfather Robert Cummings.

"If we are able to get Luke to a country with a British Embassy, we can get him the consular support he so desperately needs."

In a statement, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We have been providing advice to the UK-based family of a British national detained in Yemen since 2017 and continue to do so.

"This is a very distressing case. We are not able to provide consular assistance in Yemen.

"We appreciate that he was in Yemen before the conflict broke out and we will continue to exert every effort we can to try to find a way to get him home."
