Family raise £50,000 in memory of 'Chippy' - and want masked ball to double it

The family of Philip 'Chippy' Lumsdale have raised more than £50,000 since the Durham man died in 2018.

Chippy, 29, was a much-loved son, brother and uncle and a big fan of biking and music.

After his death, his parents Geoff and Lin Lumsdale from Tudhoe set up the Team Chippy group to fundraise in his memory for the charity which helped them in the weeks, months and years afterwards.

Whether by running the Great North Run or holding sponsored walks in the County Durham countryside, the family has held all manner of fundraisers.

Geoff added: "After Philip took his life three years ago, a neighbour put a note through our door recommending If U Care Share - and we have kept on going thanks to them.

"For such a small charity the work they do throughout the country and particularly around the North East is unbelievable.

"They really worked wonders for me and Lin. I would hate to think where we would be if it wasn't for them because it is so personal and you can feel the compassion when you talk to them. They are absolutely superb."

After Philip's death specialist support workers worked with the family to help them through such a tough time.

Geoff said for him, the best part of fundraising is all the people who "chip in for Chippy". He added: "It means a lot but it gives us something to work on for his memory and concentrate our attention on.

"A lot of the members of Team Chippy knew Philip and their support has been incredible. It’s mind-blowing. People came out of the woodwork and wanted to get involved. Nothing is a problem and the involvement is magic in everything they do. They are all into it and make a real difference."

Along with Geoff and Lin, Team Chippy includes Philip's sister Claire Hodgson and friends Julia Waterhouse and Sarah and Steve Davis.

Geoff added that it was important to thank "the acquaintances we have made and the people we've met who work for so many different companies and who have donated" during the events Team Chippy has held.

After hitting the £50,000 mark, Geoff said the aim was to use a planned masquerade ball next week (December 11) at Durham Town Hall to begin the drive to double that.

He also paid tribute to the charity, adding: "It is not just myself and Lin, but friends and other team members in Team Chippy have used If U Care Share and their help is worth a million dollars. We all want to do our bit by raising money for the charity because the work they do for so many is incredible.

"You only have to look and work out what has gone on during the lockdowns. Their workload has increased significantly and they have been there to help so many people come through such difficult times."

If U Care Share were honoured with a Points of Light award from the Prime Minister earlier in the autumn - and founder Matthew Smith added: "It is a recognition of the growth of the charity and of the importance of the subject and a reminder that the North East still has the highest rate of suicide in the UK and it is vital we are accessible to all those who need us.

"We are looking to grow and create even more differences in the communities we are already active in."
