Family praised for handing in bag they found in the road filled with more than £800,000

A family found nearly $1 million (£815,545) lying in the road after their car hit a bag filled with cash.

Emily Schantz and her family were travelling through the state of Virginia when she saw the vehicle in front swerve to avoid an object on May 16.

The Caroline County residents didn't have time to perform the same move and collided with it.

They stopped to see what they had hit and thinking someone had dumped rubbish they put the sacks in their car so other road users could be spared the danger.

It was only hours later when they got home that they discovered a haul of notes.

They called the police to hand the money in and were praised for their honesty.

Ms Schantz told WTVR that she thought her family should do the right thing because the money didn't belong to them.

"Inside of the bag, there were plastic baggies, and they were addressed with something that said 'cash vault'," she said.

The sheriff's office said it couldn't be sure how the cash found its way onto the road but added it is believed to belong to the postal service.

Major Scott Moser told the news channel: "For someone so honest and willing to give that almost $1 million back, it's exceptional on their part."

He visited the family on Monday and added: "Their two sons were there, so I put the lights on for them, but we are proud and they represented this county well by being so honest."
