Family pays tribute to 'gentle giant' who died in hospital following Gateshead crash

The family of a man who died after a car crashed into a wall in Gateshead has paid tribute to him.

Callum Gray, 28, died in hospital 11 days after he suffered serious injuries when a blue Subaru Impreza crashed into a wall near the Oval in Ryton at about 10.30pm on August 7.

Callum's family are being supported by specialist officers and today released a heartfelt tribute which said: “Callum was a really popular lad who everyone knew and loved.

“He was a gentle giant and a really great friend to everyone and we are absolutely devastated by his loss.”

Police were called to the incident and found the damaged car on B6315 Woodside Lane, just a short distance from the junction with B6317 Main Road.

An investigation was launched and officers have appealed for any witnesses, anyone with information, or any footage which may help the probe to come forward.

Sergeant John Sanderson, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrols department, thanked everyone who has come forward to assist with the enquiry and offered his condolences to Callum’s family.

He said: “Our thoughts go out to Callum’s family at this incredibly difficult time.

“We continue to offer them any support they need, and Callum’s family have asked that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with their loss.

“This was a tragic incident and we are committed to determining the events before and after the fatal collision.

“I would like to thank members of the public who have already contacted police and passed on information, and would now ask anyone else who witnessed the collision to come forward.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police on 101 or via the Northumbria Police website quoting reference 1462 of August 7.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
