The family of a boy who tragically died following an incident at the River Trent near Swarkestone have paid tribute to their ‘shining star’.
Fifteen-year-old Thandolwethu Ndlovu, who was known to his family and friends as Thando, is believed to have died in the water after visiting with a group of friends on Tuesday (July 20).
Extensive search and rescue efforts were carried out by specialist teams from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire police, and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.
But sadly Thando, who was from Chellaston, was recovered from the river the following morning on Wednesday (July 21), two days after his birthday.
Nombulelo, Thando’s mum said: “We are truly devastated.
"It feels like a part of me has been ripped apart.
"Thando was the most amazing, happy child. He was our shining star and he was loved by so many.
“Thando loved to laugh and to make friends, and he loved his school.
"He meant so much to us and would brighten all our lives. I miss my son so very much.”
Family and friends have laid tributes at the River Trent, with a large gathering taking place on Thursday afternoon, July 22, to allow people to share their memories of him.
Bouquets of flowers have been left at the scene, as have written tributes and balloons.
Nombulelo added: “Fly high my angel.
"Your will family always love you and miss you.
"Go on and create peace and love as you always did when you were on earth here with us.”
His dad, Jambulani said: “Thando was such a promising young man who was very intelligent, and he loved football, especially Chelsea.
"He was like a leader and would always go further to help others.
"Thando was exactly the child that you could hope to raise.”
An investigation into what happened was carried out and a file prepared for the coroner.
Officers do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
