Family pay tribute to 82-year-old retired teacher killed when he was hit by a car in Llantwit Major

The family of a man who died after he was knocked over by a car in Llantwit Major said he would be "greatly missed" by all who knew him.

Denis Doyle was walking along Boverton Road when he was hit by a black Honda Civic at around 6.45pm on Tuesday, July 28.

Mr Doyle, 82, a retired teacher and poet, was declared dead at the scene.

He is survived by sons Francis and William, and three-year-old granddaughter Roxanne.

In a statement his family said: “Denis had a great love of literature, nature, and poetry.

“He moved to Llantwit Major in 2011 to care for his late wife, Susan, and was a regular at many local social events.

“His family would like to thank the people of Llantwit Major for the friendship and support that they provided Denis while he was a resident of the community.

“He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

Denis Doyle was also a member of Archaelogy Cymru, and attended classes with the group which included ghost walks once a week for the last four years before lockdown took hold.

South Wales Police said officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision, and the force is appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, saw either the car or the pedestrian prior to it, or stopped to provide assistance to come forward.
