Family pay touching tribute to 86-year-old man who died after being struck by a HGV

The family of a man who died after being hit by a HGV have released a touching tribute.

Peter Bretherton, 86, died following the horror collision which took place on Ashton Old Road, in Openshaw.

Emergency services were called to the incident at around 4pm on Tuesday, October 1.

Mr Bretherton, from Openshaw, sadly died at the scene.

His family said in a statement: "Peter was a keen amateur dramatics participant who loved his singing. He enjoyed foreign holidays and spending time travelling.

“He will be sadly missed by his close friends and family.”

He had previously lived in Buxton, in Derbyshire.

Police are continuing to appeal for information following the collision.

No arrests have been made.

Ashton Old Road was sealed off for several hours following the incident but re-opened later on Tuesday evening.

Anyone with information should contact GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 1900 of 01/10/2019.
