Family of woman who died after giving birth to twins awarded $1.2m compensation

Coroner found Canberra doctor Andrew Foote failed to give appropriate care to Corrina Medway.

The partner and children of a woman who died after giving birth at Canberra's Calvary Hospital have been awarded more than $1 million in a compensation settlement.

Corrina Medway, 33, had pre-eclampsia, also called pregnancy induced hypertension, when her twin girls were delivered in May 2011.

After the birth, Ms Medway complained of serious chest and back pain and was prescribed 10 milligrams of morphine by her doctor Andrew Foote.

But a coronial inquest found Ms Medway received no relief and quickly became seriously ill.

The condition led to a stroke that ultimately caused a cerebral haemorrhage and Ms Medway's death five hours after giving birth.

Coroner Margaret Hunter found Dr Foote had failed to give appropriate treatment for the condition, which escalated until it caused her death.

New Associate Justice Verity McWilliam issued orders in the ACT Supreme Court on Monday that Ms Medway's partner and three children be paid $1.2 million.

Most of the money will be managed by the Public Trustee.
