Family of tragic Dublin stabbing victim speak out after bloody fatal attack

The brother of a young teenage Dublin boy who died following a street fight in the North says his family are traumatised after the horrific attack.

Tragic 18-year-old John McDonagh, who had recently moved to the Fermanagh area, died after suffering serious leg wounds where an artery was cut open in a bloody incident in Enniskillen shortly before 8:45pm on Saturday, April 11.

The fight involved a number of men who were armed with weapons during the altercation at Coolcullen Meadow.

Young John had to have his leg amputated in hospital after the incident and fought hard to hold onto his life but sadly died on Monday morning.

Speaking to Dublin Live, John's brother Jimmy said "no one should have gone through what John went through".

He said: "John didn't deserve that to be honest. All of the family are in a bad way over it."

Jimmy said his brother was a happy young boy that was always smiling.

He added: "He was always happy, forever smiling and laughing. It's just a horrific shock to get."

Jimmy said his grieving mother is finding it very hard to deal with the situation and the family feel it's not real considering they didn't get to say their last goodbyes.

He said: "It's really hard. Especially getting a phone call saying he died and my poor mother went to the hospital and she couldn't see him or touch him."

When police officers arrived at the scene, they found two men, including the tragic victim, on the ground with severe leg injuries.

A second man also sustained wounds to his legs and was rushed to hospital with John but his condition is currently unknown.

It is believed that a third man involved in the incident had left the scene before officers arrived.

A 19-year-old male was arrested in relation to the incident but he has since been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

Speaking about the ongoing investigation, Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said: "Tragically, this morning, the 18-year-old male victim passed away in hospital and I want to express my condolences to the victim's family, friends and loved ones at this very sad time.

"Our investigation continues this morning, and I am appealing to the public to help us establish exactly what happened and who was involved.

"If you witnessed the altercation, please get in touch with us by calling 101 and ask for detectives investigating this murder.

"If you captured footage of it on your mobile  phone, or if you were driving in the area and captured it on your dash cam, I would urge you to bring that forward to us.

"I would also appeal to the male who is also believed to have been involved in the incident, and who had left the scene before our officers arrived, to make contact with us today and tell us what happened.
